Dame Laurie Salas was one of the early members of UNIFEM NZ (now UN Women National Committee for NZ). Despite also being active in a number of other organisations promoting women’s rights and empowerment, notably the National Council of Women where she was national president for some years, she supported our activities as often as possible. Laurie had firmly-held views, especially on topics such as peace, discrimination and violence, which she promoted fearlessly. Parliamentary select committees knew that her submissions would be fact-based and strongly persuasive. They had learned that behind the “lady-like” facade was a woman of strength and principle. She will be sadly missed.
